2022 Sierra Cup
By Michelle Gallagher
The 2022 Sierra Cup is officially in the books! The Sierra Cup is an annual 600 yard match, with divisions in Sling, F-Open, F-TR and Bench. The match was held over Memorial Day weekend at the Bench Rest Rifle Club of St. Louis and was full at 80 competitors. The match consists of five individual 20 shot matches, and a two-man 20 shot team match.
Saturday was shot in cool weather and mostly mild conditions. The first day was three individual matches, plus the team match. Not many ranges could fit that many shots into one day, but the match staff did a great job of keeping things running smoothly. After the team match, we had a dinner in the clubhouse, where they gave the awards for the team match. Sunday was warmer, with very high winds. It was an exceptionally tricky day, but that just added to the challenge. The shooters all had a good sense of humor, because they knew everyone else was shooting in the same conditions.
Several Sierra shooters rose to the top after the scores were tallied. Team Sierra’s Mark Walker finished in second place in F-Open, just a few X’s behind the winner. Mark was shooting his .284 Win rifle with Sierra 7mm 183gr MatchKing bullets. Another team Sierra shooter, James Laney, placed third in F-Open. Dave Glick won second in the Bench Class, using his Dasher and Sierra 6mm 107gr MatchKing bullets. Dave Nirode won third in the Sling Class, with his 260 Remington and 6.5mm 142gr MatchKing bullets.
For 75 years, Sierra Bullets has been dedicated to supporting the shooting sports. The Sierra Cup has become a must-attend event every year. Every match has an atmosphere, and this one is always upbeat and positive. The competitors are serious, but also go out of their way to encourage and help each other. The match staff did a great job, as always. The prize table was full, which is an illustration of how generous the shooting industry is. We’re honored to be part of this match, and grateful to the volunteers, sponsors and competitors that make the match such a success. We’re already looking forward to next year!
